I really liked the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, but man, does this show have weird politics. Fisk is presented as something of a Trumpian outsider populist (albeit a more cogent and articulate one), but the show's attitudes towards crime, vigilantes, and the NYPD are outdated, veering between outright cynicism and pure copaganda.

@Tim_Eagon Marvel has been a tonal trainwreck since Iger's return to Disney, and their sudden retreat from any appearance of a progressive narrative stance is part and parcel of that.

@Tim_Eagon I think Disney+ might just be having a harder time walking the line that Netflix did, which was having the police and people‘s attitudes toward them reflect the tension of Matt being a lawyer who uses the system while being a vigilante who thinks the system is terrible. There was basically one good cop in the original show, and pretty much everyone else was either a criminal or someone you were supposed to suspect of being a criminal

@SyHoekstra I think I found it particularly grating because it feeds into the false narratives that became prevalent, especially on the right, during and after the 2020 George Floyd protests. I think that's really pernicious nowadays, but I shouldn't be surprised since Disney, like many other major corporations, have taken a rightward turn in the last 12-18 months.

@Tim_Eagon You mean the stuff with the police commissioner? I can see that. But like this show usually does, that view of the cops is almost immediately contradicted by what those two guys do at the end of the second episode. And I think that punisher tattoo is taking us in the direction of the real life popularity of violet right wing uthoritarianism in law enforcement. You’re definitely right about Disney though, so I would not be surprised if I’m wrong
