“If a paper would be truly great there must be other than statistical demonstration. It must be not a herald merely. It must couple purpose with publicity. It must enlighten as well as entertain. It must discover and exploit good as well as evil. It should interpret facts as well as publish them. It should exhibit courage as well as conviction. Finally, it must regard this truth: that malice, so unbecoming in a man, is unspeakable in a journal.” newspapers.com/article/st-loui #stlouis #journalism

“There are more than 300 people in Missouri jails who have been found by a judge to be mentally incompetent to stand trial. But the jails can’t send them for the treatment judges are requiring because there are no beds in mental treatment facilities. It’s a massive crisis in Missouri, Illinois and other states that have abandoned their responsibility to treat to people with mental illnesses.” Spot-on column by the Post-Dispatch’s Tony Messenger stltoday.com/news/local/column #missouri #justice #stlouis

For this press, it's a look at the history of activism in #StLouis during the turbulent 1960s and 70s. Long before the #Ferguson uprising, #StL city residents were engaged in #BlackPower, #GayRights, #Environmental and #AntiWar activities.

Showing yet again why the #Midwest matters.

The Free Store went so well today! Not only did normal volunteers show up, but some people in the neighborhood came and helped. Shout out to the people that stayed and just sorted clothes for like half the time.

These events always bring me such joy and hope. Already looking forward to the next one!
